To help make your home-buying experience a positive one, here are some tips to help pave the way for successful communications with a trusted real estate agent:

Be specific about the features and attributes that are most important in your selection of a new home.


Be clear about the trade-offs you are prepared to make. (This is essential not only for me as your agent, but for all buyers to agree upon up front.) For example, is the location more important that the specific house?


Is the property size more important than the house size? Is the number of bedrooms a more important consideration than a formal dining room?


Know what you can afford and how flexible you can be. Obtain a pre-qualification from a reputable mortgage broker, and work the numbers yourself to make sure you feel comfortable with the monthly carrying costs associated with a home in this range. If you need help locating a mortgage broker, I can give you some suggestions.


Provide me with your desired range, and let me know what trade-offs you are prepared to make if you cannot find a home within a certain period of time. For example, which desired attributes are you willing to forego? Or perhaps you're willing to extend the timeframe in which you'd like to find that perfect home.


As soon as you have seen each home, make notes about you liked and did not like and share your feelings with me, being as specific as you can. The more homes you see, the smarter we'll both be about what kind of homes will be worth your while to view in the future.


Be honest about the quality and level of services I provide, and be specific. For example, if you feel that I am not clued in to the kind of home that you're looking for, say so. Indicate what amount of time would be more appropriate to spend on previewing homes, or how many homes you are expecting to see within a given week.
